EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
