Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
